💬 How About You? — Keep The Conversation Going!

Today you will learn how to start a conversation with someone new ("So, what do you do after school?"), send the question back ("How about you?"), ask a follow-up question ("What does your uncle do?"), and react like a real English speaker: positive, neutral or sympathetic.

🎬 Let's Imagine...

The Summer Camp Welcome Party

Read the little scene below.

OscarHi! I'm Oscar. So, what do you do after school?
MiaI play basketball! How about you?
OscarReally? I play basketball too! That's cool!
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiLook at Oscar and Mia: they ask, they answer, they send the question back and they react. Today you'll learn how to keep a conversation going — even with someone you've just met!

🤔 When you meet a new friend, what do you ask first?

💭 "So, what do you do after school?" — "I play basketball! How about you?"
Step 1

💬 Start Talking — Questions & "How About You?"

When you meet someone new, you want to find out quickly what they do, where they live and what they like — to see what you have in common.

❓ Great Starter Questions

  • "So, what do you do after school?"
  • "Where do you live?"
  • "Do you like your school?"
  • "What club are you in?"

🔄 Send It Back!

  • Answer, then ask: "How about you?"
  • Or: "And what do you do?"
  • "I live in Sfax. How about you?"
⚡

Keep the conversation going! Even a short answer is better than silence. "Yes, I do. I like it a lot!" is much better than just "Yes." 🤐

Step 2

😃 React! — Positive, Neutral, Sympathetic

When someone tells you something, react! Your reaction shows that you are listening.

😃

Positive

Good news!

  • "Oh, that's nice!"
  • "That's interesting!"
  • "Really? Cool!"
😐

Neutral

Normal news.

  • "I see."
  • "Uh-huh."
  • "Oh."
😢

Sympathetic

Bad news.

  • "That's too bad."
  • "Oh no!"
  • "I'm sorry."

🎮 Reaction Challenge

Listen to what your new friend says, then choose the best kind of reaction. Can you get a streak of 8? 🔥

Step 3

🔗 Follow Up! — Ask One More Question

Don't ask very personal questions. But if your new friend talks about a topic first, you can ask a follow-up question about it!

🗣️ Your Friend Says…

  • "I live with my uncle in Sousse."
  • "I have a dog."

🔗 You Follow Up!

  • "Oh, nice! What does your uncle do?"
  • "Really? What's its name?"

🎭 Create & Record: Meet A New Friend

Imagine you're at a welcome party. Write a conversation with a new friend: say hello, ask what they do, send the question back, ask one follow-up question, and react at least twice!

Nice to meet you!So, what do you do after school? How about you?Where do you live? What does your … do?That's interesting! I see. That's too bad.

🎙️ Now, Record It!

Act out your conversation out loud (alone with both voices, or with a friend) and record yourselves. Then listen back!
