👗 This Jacket Is Too Big! — Clothes, This & That

Today you will learn the names of clothes, why we say a pair of jeans, how to point at things with this, these, that and those (+ here and over there), and how to say when something doesn't fit: too big, too small!

🎬 Let's Imagine...

Shopping For The School Trip

Read the little scene below.

NoraYara, look! I love this jacket. What do you think?
YaraIt's nice, but it's too big for you! How about that jacket over there?
NoraThe red one? Yes! And those shoes are cool too!
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiDid you notice? "This jacket" is near Nora, "that jacket" is over there, and "too big" means it doesn't fit. Let's learn how to shop for clothes in English!

🤔 What are you wearing today? Can you say it in English?

Nora essaie une veste jaune beaucoup trop grande devant le miroir, Yara montre une veste rouge
💭 "This jacket is too big! How about that one over there?"
Step 1

👕 Clothes — And "A Pair Of"

Some clothes words are always plural, even for one object: pants, jeans. Clothes that come in twos are plural too: socks, shoes. To count them, use a pair of.

1️⃣ One Thing: a / an

  • a t-shirt · a shirt
  • a dress · a skirt
  • a jacket

👖 Always Plural: a pair of

  • a pair of jeans · a pair of pants
  • a pair of socks · a pair of shoes
  • "My jeans are blue." (never "is" ❌)
🇺🇸🇬🇧

Culture note: in the United States, people say pants. In the United Kingdom, people say trousers — because in British English, "pants" means underwear! 😳

✨ The Dress-Up Mirror

Click the clothes to dress up the store mannequin — then listen to what it's wearing!

Step 2

👉 This, These, That, Those — Here & Over There

Use this and these for things near you (+ here). Use that and those for things not near you (+ there or over there).

this👕this shirt here
these👕👕these shirts here
that👕that shirt over there
those👕👕those shirts over there
⚡

Always plural words take these or those: "These jeans are cool." — never "This jeans" ❌. Say over there to make it stronger: "Look at those shoes over there!"

Step 3

📏 Too Big? Too Small? — Too + Adjective

Use too before an adjective when there is more than you want. It's a problem!

😕 Too… = a problem

  • "This dress is too big."
  • "These pants are too small."
  • "Those shoes are too expensive."

😃 No problem!

  • "This dress is perfect!"
  • "These pants fit me."
  • "Those shoes are cheap."

Step 5 · Extraordinary!

🎭 Create & Record: At The Clothes Store

Write a role-play between a customer and a sales assistant. The customer points at clothes (this, that, these, those), tries something on, and says if it's too big, too small... or perfect!

Can I help you?I like this jacket. How about those jeans over there?a pair of shoes It's too big. They're too small. It's perfect!Thank you!

🎙️ Now, Record It!

Act out your role-play out loud (alone with both voices, or with a friend) and record yourselves. Then listen back!
