🏷️ How Much Is It? — Prices & Clothing Labels

Today you will talk to a sales clerk: ask "How much is it?", say prices in dollars and cents (the long way and the short way!), say "I'm looking for…" and your size, and read a clothing label: size, material ("What's it made of?") and origin ("Where's it from?").

🎬 Let's Imagine...

A Birthday Present For Grandpa

Read the little scene below.

Sales clerkHello! Can I help you?
YaraYes, please. I'm looking for a sweater for my grandpa. How much is this one?
Sales clerkIt's thirty-four ninety-nine. It's 100% wool, and it's made in Italy!
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiYara asks for a price, and the clerk gives the price, the material and the origin. Today you'll learn to do all of this — and to read the little label inside your clothes!

🤔 Look at the label inside your sweater: what can you read on it?

💲 How Much Is It? — Asking For And Giving Prices

Use how much to ask for a price. The verb cost is about prices. Answer with It's…, It costs… or They cost…

1️⃣ One Thing

  • "How much is this?"
  • → "It's $36.89."
  • → "It costs $36.89."

👟 Two Or More / Pairs

  • "How much do they cost?"
  • → "They cost $86.45."
$14.00No cents"fourteen dollars"
$14.65Long way"fourteen dollars and sixty-five cents"
$14.65Short way ⭐"fourteen sixty-five"
⚡

Most people use the short way! For $1.48, say "a dollar forty-eight". Culture note: in the UK, people pay in pounds and pence (£). And in Tunisia? Dinars and millimes! 🇹🇳

Step 3

🔍 Read The Label — Size, Material, Origin

A clothing label tells you three important things: the size, the material (what it's made of) and the origin (where it's from).

❓ Ask

  • "What size is it?"
  • "What's it made of?"
  • "Where's it from?"

✅ Answer

  • "It's a medium."
  • "It's made of cotton." / "It's 100% wool."
  • "It's from Germany." / "Made in China."
⚡

made of = the material (made of cotton). made in = the country (made in Italy). Blends use the % sign: 50% cotton, 25% wool, 25% polyester = 100%!

🕵️ Label Detective

Flip the clothes to find the label. Then ask the three questions and listen to the answers!
