🍔 I Want A Hamburger! — Food, Wants & Favorites

Welcome to the food unit! Today you will learn common foods, say what you want ("She wants some ice cream.") and what you don't want, talk about your favorite food, and discover countable and uncountable nouns: a hamburger, some rice.

🎬 Let's Imagine...

Lunch At The School Cafeteria

Read the little scene below.

LeoI'm so hungry! I want a hamburger and some fries. What do you want, Nora?
NoraI want some pasta. Pasta's my favorite food! And Mia wants some rice and a salad.
LeoDo you want some chocolate ice cream for dessert? It's delicious!
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiYummy! Leo says a hamburger but some rice. Why? Because we can count hamburgers… but not rice! Let's learn food words and how to say what you want.

🤔 What's YOUR favorite food?

Step 1

🍕 Common Foods — And Your Favorite

Click a food to hear it. Use favorite to talk about the food you like best: "What's your favorite food?" — "Pizza's my favorite food!"

⚡

Favorite is the American spelling (in British English: favourite). Fries = French fries. And when food tastes very, very good, say: "It's delicious!" 😋

🍽️ Build Your Favorite Plate

Choose a person and their favorite food — the plate fills up and the sentence appears!

Step 2

🙋 I Want, She Wants — Saying What You Want

Use want + noun to say what somebody wants. Remember to add -s after he, she, it!

✅ Statements

  • "I want a hamburger."
  • "She wants some ice cream."
  • "They don't want coffee."

❓ Questions

  • "What do you want?"
  • "Do you want some water?"
  • "Does he want a salad?"

🧾 The Cafeteria Order Board

Pick a person, a food, and ✅ or 🚫 — the board writes the order (with a, an or some!).

Step 3

🧮 A Or Some? — Countable & Uncountable Nouns

Some nouns can be counted (one apple, two apples). Others cannot be counted (rice, water). They are uncountable.

🍎 Countable

  • a hamburger · an apple (one)
  • two hamburgers · three apples
  • some hamburgers · some carrots (plural)

🍚 Uncountable

  • some rice · some water · some beef
  • never "a rice" ❌ or "two waters" ❌
⚡

Use an before a vowel sound: an apple, an orange, an egg. Use some for plural countable nouns and for uncountable nouns.

🧺 Count It Or Not?

Put each food in the right basket: a / an (you can count it) or some (you can't count it)!

What do you want?I want a… I want some…I don't want… Does he want…?What's your favorite food? …'s my favorite food!It's delicious!

🎙️ Now, Record It!

Act out your conversation out loud (alone with both voices, or with a friend) and record yourselves. Then listen back!
