🏝️ Where Should We Go? — Vacations & Should

Time to plan a trip! Today you will learn vacation activities, how to give advice with should and shouldn't, how to ask "Where should we go?" — and the difference between a vacation and a holiday.

🎬 Let's Imagine...

Family Meeting

Read the little scene below.

NoraDad, summer vacation is in two weeks! Where should we go?
DadHmm… We should go to Djerba. You love the beach!
NoraYes! And Grandma should come with us. What should we do there?
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiDid you hear should? We use it to give advice or make a recommendation: "We should go to Djerba." After should, just the verb — no "to", no "-s"!

🤔 Where should your family go this summer?

Le soir au salon, Nora montre l'île de Djerba sur une carte de la Tunisie posée sur la table ; son père, sa mère avec un sac de voyage et sa grand-mère sourient

Step 2

💡 Giving Advice With Should / Shouldn't

Use should to give advice or make a recommendation. Use shouldn't (= should not) to advise someone not to do something.

✅ should + verb

  • Oscar should exercise more.
  • You should drink a lot of water.
  • We should go to bed early.

🚫 shouldn't + verb

  • Oscar shouldn't eat all the cake.
  • You shouldn't watch TV all day.
  • We shouldn't forget our sun hats.
⚡

Subject + should / shouldn't + main verb. Should is the same for everyone: I, you, he, she, we, they should — never "she shoulds" ❌. And no "to": "You should go" ✅, not "You should to go" ❌.

❓ Should We…? Where Should We Go?

To ask a yes / no question, put should first. For an open question, start with a question word: What, Where, When…

✅❌ Yes / No questions

  • Should we go camping? — Yes, we should.
  • Should I take my coat? — No, you shouldn't.

🔎 Open questions

  • What should we do this weekend?
  • Where should we go?
  • When should we leave?

Step 4 · Reading

📖 Reading: Vacation Or Holiday?

Read the text. Click 🔊 to listen.

In American English, a vacation is time away from normal work or school. In British English, this is called a holiday. We say that someone is "on vacation" or "on holiday": Nora is on vacation in Djerba for two weeks.
In American English, a holiday is a special day when most people don't go to work or school, and many businesses are closed. For example, New Year's Day is a holiday. In Tunisia, Independence Day (March 20th) is a holiday too!
