⚽ I Love Playing Soccer! — Sports & -ing

Unit 3 starts here! Today you will learn the names of sports, when to say play, go or do, how to use love / like / enjoy / hate + verb-ing ("I love playing soccer") — and what to say when you don't understand: "Can you repeat that?"

🎬 Let's Imagine...

Sports Club Day

Read the little scene below.

MiaLeo, which club do you want? I love playing volleyball!
LeoSorry, can you repeat that? It's really noisy here!
MiaVolleyball! I love playing volleyball. And I enjoy doing karate too.
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiDid you notice? After love, like, enjoy and hate, we can use a verb + -ing: "I love playing…". And Leo asked politely: "Can you repeat that?" 👏

🤔 Which sport do you enjoy? Which one do you hate?

Journée des clubs sportifs dans la cour d'une école tunisienne : volley-ball, handball, karaté et un stand de natation ; au premier plan, une fille en survêtement parle à un garçon qui met la main derrière l'oreille
📣 "I love playing volleyball!" — "Sorry, can you repeat that?"

Step 2

❤️ Love, Like, Enjoy, Hate + Verb-ing

After love, like, enjoy and hate, you can use a verb + -ing. This -ing word is called a gerund: it acts like a noun.

Oscar and Leo like playing cards. · Leo hates losing! 😄
I like playing basketball. · I don't like swimming. · She loves going to the beach. · He hates doing yoga. · They enjoy playing soccer. · I like watching tennis.
⚡

Spelling the -ing: most verbs just add -ing (play → playing). A final -e goes away: dance → dancing, ride → riding, skate → skating. Short verbs double the last letter: swim → swimming, run → running. Questions: "Do you like playing basketball?" — and a suggestion: "Let's go swimming!"

Step 3 · Final Task!

🙋 Asking For Repetition & Clarification

Didn't hear? Didn't understand? Don't worry — just ask! Here are polite expressions.

🔁 You didn't hear

  • A: I really don't like cooking.
  • B: Can you repeat that?
  • A: I don't like cooking. — B: Oh, right.

🤔 You're not sure of the meaning

  • A: It's really fun!
  • B: Are you talking about table tennis?
  • A: Yes, I am.
💡

Even more polite: start with "Excuse me, but…" or "I'm sorry, but…": "I'm sorry, but can you repeat that?" · "Excuse me, but are you talking about table tennis?" — never just "What?!" 🙅

📻 Sorry, What Did You Say?
