🔑 Let Me Show You Around!

Leo's family visits the new apartment! Today you will describe the features of a home ("The living room has a lot of light." · "There's a new fridge."), build compound nouns (book + shelf = bookshelf) and say them with the right stress (FIREplace), and give a tour: "Let me show you around! The kitchen's this way."

🎬 Let's Imagine...

Visiting The New Apartment

Leo's family visits an apartment for rent (Lesson 44). Mrs. Saida, the owner, opens the door. Read the little scene below.

Mrs. SaidaWelcome! Let me show you around. This is the living room. It has a lot of light.
LeoWow, Mom! There's a big bookshelf, and that's a lovely coffee table!
Mrs. SaidaThe kitchen's this way. There's a new fridge and a microwave. Have a look yourself!
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiLeo's mom smiles: "I can put our sofa over there… I'll take it!" Did you hear? Let me show you around · a lot of light · bookshelf · coffee table · this way · Have a look yourself. Let's learn them!

Step 1

✨ Describing Features Of A Home

Use these expressions to describe the good features and the furniture of a house or an apartment. Click a card to hear it.

🧊

fridge is the short, everyday word for refrigerator (Lesson 44). And close to = near: "The apartment is close to my school." Remember: the bedroom's painted blue = the bedroom is painted blue.

Step 2

🧩 Compound Nouns

Compound words are two words joined together to make a new word. Over time, people often write the two words as one word — but not always!

✍️ One word

bath + tub = bathtub · fire + place = fireplace · book + shelf = bookshelf · stair + way = stairway · mail + box = mailbox · drive + way = driveway

✌️ Two words

coffee + table = coffee table · swimming + pool = swimming pool

🔊

When you say a compound word, put the stress on the first word: FIREplace, BOOKshelf, COFfee table, SWIMming pool. "My apartment has a FIREplace."

Choose a first word and a second word. Can you find all 8 compound nouns of the house?

Step 3

🔑 Touring An Apartment

Use these expressions to give people a tour of your home — or to talk during a visit of an apartment for rent.

🧭 The guide says

  • Let me show you around.
  • This is the living room.
  • The kitchen's this way.
  • The microwave is over here.
  • Here's the bedroom.
  • Have a look yourself.

👀 The visitor says

  • To plan your furniture: I can put my sofa over there.
  • When you decide to move in, tell the owner: I'll take it!
  • And always: Thank you for the tour!
