💻 Which One Is Better?

New unit: Money and buying! Karim's computer is old and slow, so he's choosing a new one with his dad. Learn the adjectives to describe a product (fast, reliable, light, powerful…), and compare two things: "The laptop is faster than the desktop." · "It's more expensive." · "I need something lighter."

🎬 Let's Imagine...

Come On, Computer!

Sunday evening. Karim has to finish his science project, but his computer is taking forever…

KarimDad, my desktop computer is really old and slow. It takes five minutes to open a page!
DadYou're right. You need something faster. A laptop or a new desktop?
KarimA laptop! It's lighter, so I can carry it to my study group. But it's more expensive…
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiKarim describes his computer with two adjectives: old and slow. Then they compare: short adjective + -er (faster, lighter), long adjective → more expensive. And no than when everybody knows what we compare: something faster!

🤔 What do you check before you buy a computer or a phone?

Un garçon s'ennuie devant un vieil ordinateur qui charge ; son papa lui montre de nouveaux portables sur une tablette
🐌 My computer is really old and slow. I need something faster!
Step 1 · Vocabulary

🏷️ Adjectives For Products

One way to remember adjectives is by learning their opposites at the same time. Click a card to flip it!

➕ Two adjectives

  • Separate them with and or a comma (,).
  • My desktop computer's really old and slow.
  • I need a new, fast laptop.

🔀 Two opposites

  • attractive → unattractive / ugly
  • safe → unsafe / dangerous
  • expensive → inexpensive / cheap

⚠️ Careful with cheap!

  • 😀 That's a cheap price. Buy it! (= inexpensive)
  • 😬 That computer looks cheap. Don't buy it! (= poorly made)

🤔 Cheap Or Inexpensive?

Read what the person says. Does cheap mean a good price, or poorly made? 8 sentences.

Step 2 · Grammar

⚖️ Comparative Adjectives

When we compare two people or things, the adjective becomes a comparative, followed by than.

⚡ Short adjectives (1 syllable)

  • adjective + -er + than
  • slow → slower than · fast → faster than
  • The desktop computer is slower than the laptop.
  • Adam is taller than Karim.

🧩 Long adjectives (2+ syllables)

  • more / less + adjective + than — the adjective doesn't change!
  • The laptop is more expensive than the desktop.
  • The desktop is less expensive than the laptop.
  • Ines is more careful than her brother.
✂️

No need for than when the listener already knows what you're talking about: "My old computer is slow. I need something faster." (than my old computer) · A: You can buy a desktop or a laptop. B: The laptop is more expensive. (than the desktop)

⚙️ The Compare Machine

Choose two products and an adjective. The machine says the right comparative — watch the -er or more!

🎯 -er Or More?

Choose the correct comparative. 8 sentences.

Dans un magasin d'électronique, un papa et son fils comparent un ordinateur de bureau et un portable léger
⚖️ The laptop is lighter, but it's more expensive.
Step 3 · Reading

📖 Reading About Computers: Laptop Or Desktop?

Karim reads the store's website. Read the two product cards and the review, then answer the questions.

💻 The ZipBook laptop

⚡ Starts in 10 seconds
⚖️ Weight: 1.2 kg
🔋 Battery: 9 hours
🖥️ Screen: 14 inches
💰 Price: 2,400 DT

🖥️ The TowerPro desktop

⚡ Starts in 25 seconds
⚖️ Weight: 9 kg
🔌 No battery — it needs a plug
🖥️ Screen: 24 inches
💰 Price: 1,800 DT

Our review: Both computers are reliable, but they are very different. The ZipBook is lighter and faster than the TowerPro, and you can carry it to school or to the library. It's more expensive, of course. The TowerPro is heavier and slower, but its screen is bigger — great for watching documentaries and for drawing. It's also less expensive than the ZipBook. Our advice: for homework at a desk, choose the TowerPro. If you need to study in different places, the ZipBook is better.
