🧍 He's Tall With A Nice Smile!

Lina is at the airport. She has to find Uncle Hedi… but she was a baby the last time she saw him! Learn to describe height and build with be, to ask "What does he look like?", to use have for eyes and hair, and to put adjectives in the right order: size → age → color.

🎬 Let's Imagine...

Who Is Uncle Hedi?

Tunis-Carthage Airport, Friday, 5 p.m. Lina and her dad are waiting at the arrivals gate.

LinaDad, I don't remember Uncle Hedi. What does he look like?
DadHe's tall and thin, and he's middle-aged. He has short, gray hair and big, brown eyes. Oh — and he has a really nice smile!
LinaIs that him? The tall, young man with the black bag? … No, wait — the tall, gray-haired man is waving at us! Uncle Hedi!
🧑‍🏫 Teacher SamiUse be for height and general look: He is tall and thin. Use have for body parts: He has big, brown eyes. And the order is size → age → color: a tall, young man with a black bag.

🤔 Can you describe someone in your family in three sentences?

Step 1 · Vocabulary

📏 Height And Build

When we describe a person's body, we usually talk about height (how tall?) and build (the shape of the body). Use the verb be: She is tall and thin.

📐 Height

tall · medium height · short
My cousin is very tall.
Grandma is short and very energetic.

🧍 Build & age

thin · slim · strong
young · middle-aged · elderly
He's a thin, middle-aged man.

Words that can hurt. It is rude to call someone fat. The word overweight is less offensive, but the kindest choice is simple: don't comment on someone's weight. Talk about height, hair, eyes, a nice smile — and what the person is like!

Step 2 · Grammar

🔍 What Does He Look Like?

Ask What does (person) look like? to ask about a person's size, shape, age or general appearance. Use more precise questions for body parts: What color are his eyes? · How tall is she?

🟦 BE → the whole person

He is tall and middle-aged.
She's very tall.
They're young.
He's very good-looking.

🟧 HAVE → body parts

They have curly, red hair.
Amira has big, brown eyes.
Adam has blue eyes.
He has a nice smile.

❓ What does he look like?

  • He's tall and middle-aged.
  • He's very good-looking.

👁️ What color are his eyes?

  • They're brown.
  • (eyes = plural → are)

📏 How tall is she?

  • She's very tall.
  • She's medium height.
⚡

Nice words with be: good-looking = attractive (for men and women) · beautiful (usually for women and girls) · handsome (usually for men and boys). Grandpa is very handsome in his wedding photo! Grandma is beautiful. The negative is gentle: He's not very good-looking — but remember, a kind person has a beautiful heart!

👁️ Eyes & hair
